Prep rodeo draws big crowd to fairgrounds

The 15th annual Umpqua Valley High School Rodeo produced some thrills and spills during its run Friday and Saturday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

The rodeo attracted nearly 300 cowboys and cowgirls, ages 15-18, from around the state.

Steven Peebles of Redmond won the bareback riding competition, but suffered a broken leg in the process. R.C. Landingham of Pendleton finished second and Mass Isias of Bend was third.

Host Umpqua Valley turned in some good performances. Sarah Keller placed second in breakaway roping and Grant Garcia finished fifth in tie-down roping.

Alysha Moore, a North Bend High student-athlete who competed for Umpqua Valley last year, finished second in pole bending and tied for third in goat tying.

Umpqua Valley’s Molly Vredenburg managed a seventh-place finish in breakaway roping, Lacy Egli was eighth in pole bending and Molly Stubblefield ninth in pole bending.

Other event winners included Jeremy Finley of Mt. Vernon in steer wrestling, Alexis Doutre of Pendleton in breakaway ropinig, Ryan Bothum of Hermiston in tie-down roping, Kody Cosby of Baker City in saddle bronc riding, Jay Kimball of Dayville and Sam Percifield of Ontario in team roping, Jamie Nunnellee of Aumsville in goat tying, and Amanda King of Dayville in barrel racing and pole bending.

Roseburg was the third stop of 13 prep rodeos that are held during the school year.

BAREBACK RIDING — 1. Steven Peebles, Redmond; 2. R.C. Landingham, Pendleton; 3. Matt Isias, Bend.

STEER WRESTLING — 1. Jeremy Finley, Mt. Vernon; 2. Skyler Strassman, bend; 3. Casey Usher, Terrebonne.

BREAKAWAY ROPING — 1. Alexis Doutre, Pendleton; 2. Sarah Keller, Roseburg; 3. Jenna Johnson, Warm Springs; 7. Molly Vredenburg, Roseburg.

TIE-DOWN ROPINIG — 1. Ryan Bothum, Hermiston; 2. Chad Finley, Mt. Vernon; 3. Cody Perry, Eagle Point; 5. Grant Garcia, Glide.

SADDLE BRONC RIDING — 1. Kody Cosby, Baker City; 2. Kade McLean, Paulina.

TEAM ROPING — 1. Jay Kimball, Dayville-Sam Percifield, Ontario; 2. Justin Chappell, Redmond-T.B. Hannon, Redmond; 3. Ty Johnson, Redmond-Andrew Carleton, Merrill.

GOAT TYING — 1. Jamie Nunnellee, Aumsville; 2. Kelli Kayser, Condon; 3. (tie) Alysha Moore, North Bend, and Steffani Hofrichter, McMinnville.

BARREL RACING — 1. Amanda King, Dayville; 2. Jordan Crossley, Hermiston; 3. Olivia Train, Myrtle Point.

POLE BENDING — 1. Amanda King, Dayville; 2. Alysha Moore, North Bend; 3. Mickie King, Molalla; 8. Lacy Egli, Roseburg; 9. Molly Stubblefield, Roseburg.
